Captain Atom: The Healing Factor

Have you ever thought that every Superhero would make things right no matter what?  If someone got lost he or she would find the missing person.  If someone was in trouble, they would save him or her.  If someone was sick, the hero would make it better.  After all, they are our heroes.  I remember as a child always having this fantasy.  However, truth be told, it was never handled in the comic books.  And if it was, normally the hero would be helpless to do anything.  I remember watching the Wonder Woman episode "The Girl from Islandia" where Wonder Woman was helpless to go after the submarine.

Recently in Captain Atom, he became one of those heroes who can truly touch someone's life and save the day.  Last time we saw Cap, he had just become self aware.  The issue begins with Captain Atom outside of a hospital.  As he goes inside, we see Mikey who has a brain tumor.  Captain Atom feels compasion and begins to help by going inside and destroying the cancer.  As he does this, Mikey is receiving Chemotherapy and the medication starts to attack the cancerous cells and any foreign body, namely, Captain Atom.  Of course Captain Atom is victorious and saves the day and saves Mikey.

Stay tuned for Captain Atom: Be it ever so humble, you can't go back home

Teen Titans 8

Is it my imagination or was Teen Titans 8 incomprehensible? At least we get to see Wonder Girl's entire amour. And we get to see Lilith/Omen for the first time, although she looks like Magpie from the 80s Byrne Batman run.

Captain Atom: Pure Nuclear Energy

Captain Atom: Comes in with a nuclear blast
The Captain Atom series is just a sizzling atomic blast.  Truth be told, I am not a fan of Captain Atom and have not been since the Charlton reprint era in the 70s.  I always loved The Blue Beetle better.  I had no idea how Captain Atom would be when I saw the cover solicits.  To me it looked like the original was going to now copy the facsimile of Dr. Manhattan, but boy am I glad I was wrong.  JT Krul and Freddie Williams II are doing an extremely wonderful job. Reading this series has introduced me to  lots of new characters and new delights.  In this brand new DC Universe, there are so many clandestine organizations and laboratories.  I have yet to encounter Star Labs, but there are the CADMUS, CHECKMATE, NOWHERE laboratories/organizations among others.  In Captain Atom, we have the Continuum off somewhere in Kansas.  This immediately reminded me of Kingdom Come.  This seems to be the Haven for Nathaniel Adams/Captain Atom when he needs rest from his adventures.  The staff provides an intriguing supporting cast.

Captain Atom

Dr. Megala
The first is Dr. Megala. He is a wheelchair bound scientific mind, perhaps an homage to Steven Hawking.

Rinata
Rinata is a wide-eyed doctoral candidate that works with Dr. Megala.
The Continuum
The Continuum is somewhere in Kansas and it looks like a super colider.

Self Awareness
The first two issues of Captain Atom deal his journey through becoming self aware.  The story begins with Captain Atom's narration as why humans are the more evolved species.  I think this ominous intro is to show how Captain Atom himself  is the next stage of evolution. The first action sequence shows fighting an armored man and his discovery a new power.  As he fights the armored man, he begins to see the atomic bonds that bind atoms and learns how to destroy those bonds and in doing so, he disarms that individual. Now this is something that is new to him and we see his disbelief. Then he feels something in his hand, and sees the atoms of his hands dissipate and he rushes off to The Continuum to confer with Dr. Megala.  After explaining the manifestation of his new remarkable power, Megala states that it is the S.N.F.  (Strong Nuclear Force) that binds the atoms.  Ok, I have to digress here a little, the use of acronyms in this book was not to my liking, it reminded me of the 90s, especially the Cyberforce comic series where EVERYTHING, and I mean everything, was an acronym.  I shall now return to my analysis.
When you see the concern at the continuum, you can almost guess what will come next.  Captain Atom will no longer be able to use his powers because they can kill him.  Also, some huge crisis will appear and Captain Atom will have to stop it and sacrifice himself.

Suddenly Rinata shows that there is not only a huge Earthquake, but also a volcano.  Easier said that done, but then we find out that it is in Manhattan.  Captain Atom is off to the rescue and he stops some nuclear power plants from going to meltdown and he averts the disaster by turning the  lava into snow.  Then at the very end, he dissipates.

La Llorona haunting the pages of Batwoman

Background

Currently, my Spanish 1102 students are working on their epic movies on their reimagining of the legend of La Llorona.  Living in New Mexico, and especially if you are from Northern New Mexico, you grew up hearing the legend of La Llorona if not her wail.  The people from Northern New Mexico are the descendants of the Conquistadores that came to the New World in the 15th and 16th centuries.  As they passed through Mexico, these Conquistadores brought with them the legend of the Wailing Woman.   Any Hispanic knows she lives near the acequias (ditches), or the rios (rivers) or lagunas (ponds and lakes).  Sometimes she is near the traques del tren or una cueva.  As children, we are warned to stay away from these dangerous places because La Llorona is looking for her children, and she may yet catch us to replace her lost children.  And of course we were freaked out by our grandparents, but at least we did not drown. The story of La Llorona has no antecedent from Spain.  Perhaps the closest would be the Greek Tragedy Medea, but this woman unlike La Llorona feels no remorse.

La Llorona or the Wailing Woman is a woman who haunts the waterways in the Spanish American World.  She is a product of the Conquest, because part of the Legend is that she loses her children, normally because of a man.  As times progress, new elements are added to the story that range from jealousy, guns, infidelity, and the like.  Now the root of this Legend might come from Dona Marina/Malitzin/Malinche, who was the concubine of Hernan Cortes.  Many speculate that she is the woman who dress as the Virgin Mary/Tonatzin (Lady of Guadalupe) to convert the Native Americans in Mexico.  In many ways, she was instrumental in the conquest because her  Tlaxcalan name Malintzin became corrupted to Malinche which now means traitor.  Her name originally meant tongue or translator, however, now it stands for treason.  History tells us that she had sons with Cortes and they survived to become part of the Spanish Royal Court, but legend tells us something else.  She killed them because as mestizos (half breeds) they would not be accepted.  Now Spanish culture is made of mestizos, even in Spain, and skin color is not the determining factor for prejudice, but rather your education and Social Economic Status.  However, because the legend is part of the Conquest, this is an integral part of the story.  Later Malinche feels remorse and must forever search for her children in the waterways.

The Llorona is not evil, but rather a cursed soul.  She is never depicted wearing black in the Hispanic culture, rather she is dress in white.  They are elements of the Earth Mother Tonantzin and the Virgin Mary, in the Ave-Eva continuum that exists in the Hispanic Culture.

Batwoman

Recently, La Llorona played an important part in Batwoman.  I was worried that she would not be depicted in a good light.  She was portrayed as a cursed woman, wearing white, and in the end, she let go of the children.  J.H. Williams II and W. Haden Blackman did a superb job on her depiction.  I am glad that J.H. Williams III and Blackman were sensitive to the Hispanic Culture and its beloved legend.  It could have been disastrous and made her look like Elvira.  Williams art is really beautiful and haunting.  The story has me captivated, and the splash pages, pun intended, were breathtaking, another pun.

I loved how the Llorona would use water in the story.  The scene with the Holy Water was spooky.  As Batwoman goes against La Llorona, she makes Kate confront her past demons of her mother and sister, in the end she turns the table on La Llorona whose name is Maria and tells her, "Your kids died because of you.  Now look at the thing you have become."  These words make Maria realize that she is in the wrong and atones for her sins by telling Batwoman where some missing children are.  As La Llorona disappears, she alludes that she has been conjured as a demon by MEDUSA.  This is the last we see of La Llorona. Overall they did a fine job with the exception of the demon reference.
